Saturday at the Tower: The Farmers Market and Gilbert's Weekend Economy
The Saturday farmers market under the water tower is the town's weekly reunion — and a small-business economy in its own right. Plus: the season at SanTan Village.

Saturday morning in Gilbert has a standing appointment: the Gilbert Farmers Market, held in the Heritage District in the water tower's neighborhood, where the town's week converges on farm stands, food trucks and the long social aisle between them. In November, with the weather finally cooperating, the market runs at its fullest — Arizona farms bringing the winter desert's produce: greens, citrus arriving, squash, dates, honey, baked goods and the coffee line that functions as the town's front porch.
The market is an economy as well as an event. Its vendors are the region's small agriculture and food craft — family farms from Queen Creek and the Valley's remaining agricultural pockets, cottage bakers, salsa and preserve makers, flower growers — for many of whom the Saturday market is the storefront they cannot otherwise afford. Gilbert's shoppers, in turn, get the town's most direct line to its farming roots: the market is where the subdivisions meet the agriculture they replaced and, in a few stubborn pockets, that survives.
Across town, the season's other retail engine warms up: SanTan Village, the open-air regional center at Williams Field and San Tan Village Parkway, enters its holiday quarter with the outdoor format the desert winter was made for. The center and the power centers around it form Gilbert's sales-tax engine — the revenue engine behind the town budget — and their November-to-December performance is a fiscal story this desk tracks as faithfully as any council vote.
Together the two poles describe Gilbert's commercial character: the curated, walkable, local market under the farm town's tower, and the regional open-air mall built for the suburb's scale — heritage and convenience, four miles apart, both full on a November Saturday.
Our retail coverage will keep both in view: market vendor news and seasonal schedules, SanTan Village's openings and closings, and the sales-tax numbers that translate shopping into streets and services. In Gilbert, Saturday is an economic section. We will write it that way.
